A car’s driven wheels are positioned on large, sensor-equipped rollers that simulate various road conditions—such as acceleration and hill climbing—allowing for precise tuning, diagnostics, and data collection, including air/fuel ratios, boost, and RPM.
Key Features and Functions:
- Performance Measurement: Measures wheel horsepower (WHP), torque, and calculates engine (flywheel) power.
- Components: Consists of rollers, brake retarders (to apply load), and sophisticated software to monitor data.
- Testing Process: Vehicles are typically strapped down and run in a high gear (e.g., 4th or 5th) from low RPM to the redline to gather data.
- Safety and Diagnostics: Enables safe, high-speed testing without requiring public roads, and helps identify issues like ignition timing faults.
- Type: 2WD (two-wheel drive), capable of handling over 1000bhp.
